Fatty acids are crucial for recovery – yet some patients need reduced amounts of lipids

ESPEN guidelines recommend a lipid dose of 1.0 g/kg/day for patients on parenteral nutrition (PN).2 Still, some patients may not need this amount of lipids. For example, critically ill patients receiving propofol get a large lipid-based calorie intake from this source.2 Also, patients on long-term PN can be at risk of developing intestinal failure-associated liver disease (IFALD), which has been associated with certain lipid emulsions in the PN formulation.3,5 Reducing the lipid dose to accommodate calories delivered by propofol or cycling PN in long term PN patients is made possible with flexibility in lipid dosing enabled by Clinimix.
